How To: Farmhouse Style Moulding

I love the look of traditional crown moulding, but I don’t love the price tag or complicated way it is installed, so this farmhouse trim is the perfect solution. Consisting of two trim boards, this farmhouse style moulding is so easy to do yourself.

There’s a small story that goes with how my husband and I decided to incorporate this moulding into our home.

We were visiting with friends in Destin, Florida last year when we popped into one of the rental properties they manage down there. Inside, the decor was simple, modern and coastal, very similar to most of the homes in that area. We noticed the trim near the ceiling and how simple it was. We looked at each other and said “we can do that.”

Coincidentally, we had been looking into installing crown moulding in our home and finding it to be pricier than we wished and more complicated than we’d hoped.

This farmhouse style moulding consists of two trim boards, a 1x6 nailed to the wall and a 1x4 nailed to the ceiling. Wood filler and caulk hide any imperfections, and paint seals the deal.

This trim is so easy to install, I did it myself. My husband works long hours and I’d never get anything done if I waited til the weekend when he’s off to do all of the projects I want done. If you do this yourself, please utilize all regular safety precautions.

Wear safety glasses when you’re making your cuts, and make sure you know your way around a pancake compressor and nail gun.

Below you can see the installed boards after I’ve covered the nail holes with wood filler, but before I caulked and painted, so this allows you to see the layout of the boards a little better. With inside corners I never bother to miter the ends, but instead just butt the boards up to each other because once it is caulked and painted you can never tell the difference.

I painted all of the trim in our house with Benjamin Moore’s Super White in eggshell, with the exception of our baseboards which I painted in the same color, but with a semigloss finish which makes them easier to clean.

Coming soon is a complete refresh of this dining area. I’ve already ordered new dining chairs and I’m currently scouring Facebook Marketplace for a different rug, so stay tuned for that.
